Intro

The goddess of the green room, and the maven of makeup is here today. I first met Chantee Willis in the greenroom at C-Suite conference in Dallas and not only fell in love with her work, but now know what separates the good from the great. Here to talk about her rise to greatness, and how to powder up a shiny face. Welcome Chantee to the Nice Guys podcast.

You handled all of the egos with style and grace. How challenging is that as a makeup artist?

Talk about relationships

When we were in the green room we chatted about people need good technique but share some common mistakes people have when it comes to talent versus passion and drive and desire.

When did you know you were in the right zone?

Any famous people in your chair?

Ep. 196: Marketing 101 and building a team that cares. Find out how from Tony Delmercado

Doug- @DJDoug

Strickland- @NiceGuyonBiz

Tony- @tdelmercado

How to build a team of amazing pros that care about each other, work hard and do phenomenal work for clients - which translates to revenue and happiness for all, on The Nice Guys Today

Talking about:  How did you curate a bad-ass culture of professionals who have committed fully to the organizational goals while providing top-tier service to clients...all in the Marketing business

Nobody does it alone. Don't believe your own hype. Stay humble - work harder. Hire right - hire forever, and treat your compatriots like gold (because they are). Share the vision, create a culture of excellence where people's opportunity is merit-based and unlimited. Never eat alone.

Quotable: Nobody does it alone. Don't believe your own hype. Stay humble - work harder.

Quotable: Hire right - hire forever, and treat your compatriots like gold (because they are).

Quotable: Share the vision, create a culture of excellence where people's opportunity is merit-based and unlimited.

He’s been on the right bus with the right people and translated great relationships into big bucks as Chief Operating Officer of Hawke Media.

Tony helps answer the following questions for The Nice Guys:

What is marketing all about in 2016 and why do marketing companies have a tough rep to overcome?

Why is it that everyone that has a social media account and 1000 followers is all the sudden an expert.

Where do you see the marketing industry going and what does the frontier look like?

What’s dead in the marketing world?

What is old school to you that still hits a homerun?

Ep. 191: Get ahead by being lazy with Laurence Shorter

Doug- @DJDoug

Strickland- @NiceGuyonBiz

Laurence @TheLazyGuru

The Lazy Guru: A Half-American Scot Who Lives in England

  • Stress can be created in any moment
  • The moment where all stress dissipates, where there are no problems/pressures…. never ever arrives
  • Life is going to continue to be complex, difficult and unpredictable so you might as well just relax right now
  • As some point, the ‘balance’ achieved during meditation has to become a continuous state
  • This is as much about enjoyment of stress as it is avoiding stress
    • Stress does not ever go away, you just have to learn to manage it
  • Everyone has a Survival mechanism that has 2 states:
    • A hyper-engaged state/hyper alpha state of fighting stress
    • An “in-denial” state

Action Steps

  • Often when we are selling something, we feel that we have to ‘push’ something
  • ‘Push’ ourselves
  • “Push’ our product
  • BUT THAT IS THE OPPOSITE OF AN Effective SALES TECHNIQUE
  • We often do things that we think we need to do because we have been told that that is a good thing to do
  • When you are really into something and can add value you to it, the money will follow
  • Do not focus on your agenda in a conversation, just let the conversation go where it is going to go.
    • Let go of your expectations in a conversation

The Heart of the Lazy Guru - Making Space

  • People who are genuinely creative have a whole bunch of practices that people who uncreative people can benefit from massively
  • Creating space for something magical to happen is something that we all need to do
    • Creativity and spirit is essential for an entrepreneur
  • Making space is the discipline of carving out little spaces of time, daily, to do nothing
    • Most of us have a bunch of mind talk that gets in the way - it is chock full of concern and anxieties
    • Try to listen to them, not talk to them
  • Things will happen to you naturally in a way that will surprise you

Ep. 188: Cheers to Holy Matrimony, Meditation, and Entrepreneurship with Laura Cannon

Doug- @DJDoug

Strickland- @NiceGuyonBiz

2 Different Types of Clients….

  • Have achieved success but now they feel like they are missing something
  • Others are leading heavily from the heart while trying to adapt to a capitalist market

At the end of people’s life, they are not talking about accomplishments but rather the things/people that they love.

Getting Into the Health and the Heart...

  • The work/life balance is very elusive, there really is no such thing.
    • Focus on work life integration. Because if you run your own business, there is no way to turn one type of life off.
  • The person that shows up every day to run a business is the same person going home to a husband or a wife.
  • What is most important is giving yourself the time and making the time to meditate. Start with just one or two minutes.
    • Meditation  grows our ability to handle the salty moments in life

Action Step to Feel Your Business More...

  • Close your eyes, really think about what life is like when your 80.
    • And you are looking back at what you deem "success" to be
      • Find 3 words to describe how that success feels
      • Take those words and make a way in your life to feel that a little bite more, right now
      • We really do not know what is coming next, so live those words

Laura’s Book - "The Conscious Entrepreneur"

  • Maximizing your potential for success, freedom and happiness
  • Being aware of you and what you do well
  • Talks about life/work integration
  • It is not just about business, it is about loving what you do
    • You can dig into it, with your heart and mind

Ep. 186: Carrie H. Smith Dropped Corporate Business Like a Hot Potato

Doug- @DJDoug

Strickland- @NiceGuyonBiz

“Smart Marketing Consulting” - Closing the gap between where you are and where you want to be. It is all about the message, the market and then your media.

How am I Going to Compete Outside of the Corporate World?!

  • The purpose of what the corporate world was doing was not fulfilling to Carrie anymore.
  • Instead of wide-net marketing, she jumped into honing in on technology and target that perfect client.
  • If does not matter what the benefits are, if you do not love what you do, it is not worth it.
  • Having a job that you hate, it takes away your motivation and energy even after hours.

Passion Search

  • Ask yourself: “If you didn’t have to make any money, what would you do?”
  • There is nothing you can do more than display your knowledge and what you’ve done to gain the trust and attention of your niche.
  • Capitalize on people trusting you. It is about creating value and not asking anything from them except for maybe a name and an e-mail address.
  • All too often, people in marketing are going up to people and first say, “Buy my stuff, buy my stuff.” There needs to be progression.

There are 3 key ways to grow your business:

  1. Increase the amount of customers
  2. Increase the average transaction overall
  3. Increase the average transaction per customer

  • Linkedin? Facebook? Twitter? Do I need to be on that?
    • The better or bigger answer is, “It depends.” Where is your niche?
  • How are you handling current customers? Are you giving value first?
  • WHO are you marketing to? Identify the specifics, try to describe the perfect client. Then use that to advertise smartly.

Jordan Harbinger started out as a lawyer. Then he worked on Wall Street. Now, he makes more money than he did at either of those jobs, recording a podcast.

Jordan's podcast talks about confidence, networking, relationships, business topics and emotional intelligence. but he also show people the HOW tos and the WHYs as well.

Jordan talks about topics like relationships, social perceptions, men and women. But as I listen to your guests, I start to get sucked in. Like KimSeltzer and Dr. Welch who was just on. People need this stuff.

Ep. 152: Kathryn Budig is a bad-ass when it comes to wellness, health, yoga and lifestyle choices.

Kathryn on Twitter- @kathrynbudig

Doug on Twitter - @djdoug

Strickland on Twitter - @niceguyonbiz

Kathryn Budig can help you feel better. Well, you may need to do a little work too, but she can help point you in the right direction. Hear how on The Nice Guys today.

Kathryn is an author, speaker, cook (not yet a chef), yogi, and so much more. We apologize for totally butchering her name in the intro (I blame it on Doug), but here are some of the things we talk about on the show today:

- Diet, wellness, meditation and yoga. These are not just for hippies and Buddhists anymore, these are tools that you can use to feel better about yourself which can help your business.

- If you don't want to start with yoga or meditation, try starting with a recipe or an affirmation written in your mirror.

- Everybody doubts themselves sometimes, find ways to focus on the positive.

People are comfortable being stagnant. Don't be! Step outside your comfort zone.

The Science of Influence and How To Make it Work for You. Dr. Carmen Simon

Doug on Twitter @djdoug

Strick on Twitter @niceguyonbiz

Dr. Carmen Simon on Twitter @areyoumemorable

Entrepreneurs survive in business if and only if clients remember them. Dr. Carmen Simon is the author of Impossible to Ignore, Creating Memorable Content to Influence Decisions, hear more about that on Then Nice Guys today.

She's been coaching employees from visible brands to use brain science guidelines in their messaging. Memory is at the root of all decision-making and because the amount of information around us is increasingly abundant, it will become harder for people to remember what's what and make favorable decisions.

Here are some of the questions Dr. Simon answers today:

- What's the differences between influence and manipulation?

-What are the biggest insights from memory research that we can use to thrive in business?

-Why is it more important to influence other people’s memory than working on your own?

-What are some techniques to use when creating content that stays on people’s minds?

- How does the brain make decisions?

If someone remembers you, will that memory live forever?

-If someone remembers you negatively, are you doomed?

@Jessica Herrin  Jessica on Twitter

@djdoug Doug on Twitter

@niceguyonbiz Strick on Twitter

When you are working hard at your business, "Nice" can go out the door fast, but Jessica Herrin never let that happen while growing Stella & Dot. Hear her story on The Nice Guys today.

Here's a few things we learned about Jessica today:

She is authentically passionate.

Not being nice is not effective.

You grow a company by growing the people in your company.

Love what you do. Put passion into what you are.

Helping the people around you succeed, will help you succeed.

Start with a bedrock of self-confidence.

Your best statement piece should be your empowerment.

It's freeing to realize that you care about people more, but care less about what they think of you.

Ep. 141 Working on a startup? Alex Gorstan can help

Twitter - @alexgorstan

Doug's Twitter Handle - @djdoug

There are 10 critical things to know when considering a startup. You can learn them all on The Nice Guys Podcast today.

Alex's lessons learned in the world of startups:

1. Before taking action, make sure you understand exactly what problem you’re trying to solve and who you are trying to solve it for.

2. You’re tricking yourself and your investors if you think that your business is worth a dime until you prove you can earn one!

3. Wherever you have a strong network is where you should build your business. New York or California is not the only places startups can be successful.

4. The first five people you hire will define the culture of your company forever. This might be the most important decision you will make.

5. It’s not just about making a product, it’s also about telling the world about it - you must do both excellently.

6. Make a plan, then throw it away. Plans are worthless, but planning is everything. (Eisenhower’s advice)

7. Throw your first design away. You learn a lot during the design process and the first one is still plagued by assumptions you had when you first started. The 2nd design will be much better.

8. Thinking about starting something and have your eyes on San Francisco? Take a detour for a year, find a job that will move you there and get you grounded in a new city while you moonlight and make some network connections. Then jump if you’re ready to do so.

9. Engineering is important, but design is even more important and usually more difficult. Find yourself a rockstar designer, don’t try to do it yourself, even if you can.

10. Start today! As you get older, your network will get stronger, you will become wiser and more skilled but it will become more difficult to take risks. You may have children on the way, maybe they’ll be starting school. Your parent’s might be aging and need your help. Murphy is just around the corner waiting to enact his law and you’ll be stuck wishing you’d given it a shot.
