Ep. 191: Get ahead by being lazy with Laurence Shorter

Doug- @DJDoug

Strickland- @NiceGuyonBiz

Laurence @TheLazyGuru

The Lazy Guru: A Half-American Scot Who Lives in England

  • Stress can be created in any moment
  • The moment where all stress dissipates, where there are no problems/pressures…. never ever arrives
  • Life is going to continue to be complex, difficult and unpredictable so you might as well just relax right now
  • As some point, the ‘balance’ achieved during meditation has to become a continuous state
  • This is as much about enjoyment of stress as it is avoiding stress
    • Stress does not ever go away, you just have to learn to manage it
  • Everyone has a Survival mechanism that has 2 states:
    • A hyper-engaged state/hyper alpha state of fighting stress
    • An “in-denial” state

Action Steps

  • Often when we are selling something, we feel that we have to ‘push’ something
  • ‘Push’ ourselves
  • “Push’ our product
  • BUT THAT IS THE OPPOSITE OF AN Effective SALES TECHNIQUE
  • We often do things that we think we need to do because we have been told that that is a good thing to do
  • When you are really into something and can add value you to it, the money will follow
  • Do not focus on your agenda in a conversation, just let the conversation go where it is going to go.
    • Let go of your expectations in a conversation

The Heart of the Lazy Guru - Making Space

  • People who are genuinely creative have a whole bunch of practices that people who uncreative people can benefit from massively
  • Creating space for something magical to happen is something that we all need to do
    • Creativity and spirit is essential for an entrepreneur
  • Making space is the discipline of carving out little spaces of time, daily, to do nothing
    • Most of us have a bunch of mind talk that gets in the way - it is chock full of concern and anxieties
    • Try to listen to them, not talk to them
  • Things will happen to you naturally in a way that will surprise you

Ep. 186: Carrie H. Smith Dropped Corporate Business Like a Hot Potato

Doug- @DJDoug

Strickland- @NiceGuyonBiz

“Smart Marketing Consulting” - Closing the gap between where you are and where you want to be. It is all about the message, the market and then your media.

How am I Going to Compete Outside of the Corporate World?!

  • The purpose of what the corporate world was doing was not fulfilling to Carrie anymore.
  • Instead of wide-net marketing, she jumped into honing in on technology and target that perfect client.
  • If does not matter what the benefits are, if you do not love what you do, it is not worth it.
  • Having a job that you hate, it takes away your motivation and energy even after hours.

Passion Search

  • Ask yourself: “If you didn’t have to make any money, what would you do?”
  • There is nothing you can do more than display your knowledge and what you’ve done to gain the trust and attention of your niche.
  • Capitalize on people trusting you. It is about creating value and not asking anything from them except for maybe a name and an e-mail address.
  • All too often, people in marketing are going up to people and first say, “Buy my stuff, buy my stuff.” There needs to be progression.

There are 3 key ways to grow your business:

  1. Increase the amount of customers
  2. Increase the average transaction overall
  3. Increase the average transaction per customer

  • Linkedin? Facebook? Twitter? Do I need to be on that?
    • The better or bigger answer is, “It depends.” Where is your niche?
  • How are you handling current customers? Are you giving value first?
  • WHO are you marketing to? Identify the specifics, try to describe the perfect client. Then use that to advertise smartly.

Ep. 135 Dark Justice is a dark comedy, but man is it funny. We talk to star Che Holloway today.

This guy is FUNNY! Che Holloway

This guy is FUNNY! Che Holloway

In Dark Justice, Che Holloway plays Amir Johnson, the first black cop in a small town. We talk entertainment, racism, selling yourself and so much more today on The Nice Guys.

Don't be afraid of taking risks, things will always remain a "what if", if you don't try. Life is too short to play it safe, I'm learning this personally in my own journey throughout life.

Definitely visit DARK JUSTICE, we have lots of cool information and announcements up there, our web site is www.darkjusticeshow.com were also available on Youtube, Funny or Die, Stream Now TV (a streaming service hosting Indi films and shows), Vimeo and Daily Motion!

Two films up on streamnowtv for your consideration, PRESSURE, written and directed by Reginald Altidor, tells the story of an ex con who comes back home and is forced to make a heavy decision to support his family. Another film, MODIEVAL written and directed by Bryan Ribiero, is a kids/family/fantasy short about a wizard and a knight on a quest for treasure. This film has a fun spin because of its RPG sequences similar to Scott Pilgrim, directed by Edgar Wright.

As for upcoming projects, there's one I'm really excited about, its called Elysian Field, its a cross between being a period piece/fantasy/action and drama, Elysian Field, written by Carlos Alvarez ( 8 is infinity) and Directed by Jon Leyton (GrandMasterElephant) is in post production and a teaser of this film can be found in both my personal reels (www.cheholloway.com) and ongrandmasterelephant.com I will keep people updated about this project through my social media, when you think of Elysian Field, think of a cross of Othello and Django Unchained...yeah..

Ep. 121: Interview with Productivity Master Chris Bailey

Chris Bailey published an incredible book called The Productivity Project, Accomplishing more by managing your time, attention and energy.

I'll let Chris tell you a little about himself:

1. I’m Buddhist, and meditate for 30 minutes every day. I first became enamored with meditation and Buddhism through my yoga practice, and haven’t stopped practicing since. (It might seem weird that someone who’s into productivity is into Buddhism and meditation, but I think the two can work together in really interesting ways.)

2.  He graduated University with a business degree with specializations in marketing and management. While I’m into some things that seem hippie-dippy on the surface (like meditation), I think my business-y mind helps me cut through all of the bullshit out there so I can focus on the practical side of everything I write about and experiment with.

3. I grew up in Canada, and have lived here all my life. If you notice a lot of politeness in the way I talk, this is why. I currently live in the nation’s capital, Ottawa, and absolutely love it here. If you come to visit, I’ll treat you to poutine and a beaver tail.

4. I have had some cool work experience, even though I’m 25. I was fortunate enough to work a few fun co-op internships throughout University, including one where I independently hired about 200 co-op students for a global telecom firm (my school named me their Co-op Student of the Year for this job). I also worked a few corporate jobs throughout University so I could graduate with as little debt as possible.

5. A few of my favorite things in the world: Green tea, writing, typography, space, technology (I’m a huge nerd), em dashes (they’re so versatile!), and Oxford commas.

Ep. 115: Be extraordinary. Learn how today from leadership development expert Mark Sanborn

Mark is a NY Times best selling author, a member of National Speaker Association’s Hall of Fame, professional speaker and president of a studio for leadership development. His client list of over 2400 clientsis like a who’s who in the corporate world and includes Harley Davidson, FedEx, HP, IBM, Microsoft and ESPN. Here are some things we learned from Mark today:

It's important to be a nice guy, but sometimes you need to let the world feel your weight.

What you do is not as important as how you do it.

The difference being normal vs. being extraordinary can be just a few simple thinks that you do every day.

Using ABCD can help- Go "Above and Beyond the Call of Duty."

Personal responsibility, authentic relationships and respects for others make a triangle for success in life.

Don't think "I have to do this", change that to "I get to do this", inject fun into whatever you do.

Nobody can prevent you from choosing to be exceptional.

Everyone makes a difference, what kind of difference do you choose to make?

Ep. 103: Ted Rubin is a connector, relationship builder, speaker, and a really nice guy

Ted Rubin has more good advice on business than we could squeeze into 25 minutes, so we let him talk longer. Hell, Doug was begging Ted to stay on the show longer. Amazing info that you have to listen to on The Nice Guys today. The "F" bomb is dropped, Ted gets so passionate.

Here's what we learned from Ted on the Podcast today:

It's all about "RonR" - Return on Relationships #RonR

Focus on who you are and what you're saying, not on how many followers you have.

Look people in the eye digitally- Connect in the same way you would face to face.

Measure the ROI of Trust and the ROI of Loyalty, they both lead to ROI

Brands are from Mars, and consumers are from Venus.

A network gives you reach, but a community gives you power.

Ep. 91: TedX, Beer Pong, Ice Hockey, Meditation and quitting drinking. We go into all of this in our talk with Terry Lancaster today.

In the last 3 years Terry Lancaster quit drinking, lost 60 pounds, ran for the last 354 days in a row, wrote a book, ran across the Golden Gate Bridge, and spoke at TedX. Hear all about it on The Nice Guys Podcast today.

He is writing, speaking and helping others build better lives one better decision at a time. Here's more that we learned about Terry on the podcast

- He stopped drinking for 30 days, and it felt so good that he quit for another 30 days. He kept that up for 3 years and is still not drinking.

He uses the Pomadoro technique- 25 minutes of concerted effort can get almost anything done.

 - He also follows the Charles Emerson Winchester technique- Do 1 thing. Do it very well. Move onto the next.

 - Nothing will ever be perfect, not your business, not your life. But you have the right, the resources and the responsibility to make them better.

- His book "Better! Self-Help for the Rest of Us" will be published Dec. 28. The digital book will be free during launch week, until midnight New Year's Eve. Special prices and bonuses all week on the softcover, hardcover and audiobook. seehttp://TerryLancaster.com/better for more info

Ep. 61 Lower your price, or raise customer service?

Lower prices or better service? Today The Nice Guys make an argument for not lowering your prices and advice on how to attract more customers with better service.

Call to Action- Get on the map! To get pinned on our listener map answer our 2 question survey at www.DougSandler.com, or tweet out to @DJDoug or @NiceGuyonBiz and say "Put me on the map!" with your location. Doug is giving away audio copies of his book "Nice Guys Finish First" to the first 10 people who do!

Tech Talk- www.Squarespace.com is a great website design tool that is very professional and very inexpensive. There are a lot of website design tools available today, but this is one of the best.

Signature advice- Price vs. Value

Businesses make decisions every day regarding where to focus their resources to attract more customers. Lower prices, or better service? We fall squarely in the "better service" camp and here's why:

• Nordstrom's, Ritz-Carlton and Zappos. 3 incredibly successful companies built entirely on customer service.

• Moo.com vs. Vista Print

• Valvoline oil change vs. Jiffy Lube

Please visit our sponsor at www.Moo.com for great business cards and even better customer service.

Signature Tips from the Nice Guys- Be nice to your competition

• Putting down your competitors is old school. The world today is social, and everyone talks.

• Figure out what it is that makes your product or service stand out and talk about that.

• If there is nothing that you do better than anyone else, find another business, get out now.

• Competitors can be enemies or allies. Allies will teach you, help you grow, and will send excess business your way.
